My name is Bob Ferber and I’m Vice President of Thorougbred Education Foundation, Inc. My life has been dedicated to improving the welfare of animals. I’m a thirty year veteran Los Angeles rosecutor, the first full-time prosecutor of animal abuse and neglect, and helped create the first animal cruelty prosecution unit in the nation. I’ve also written key animal welfare legislation that is now law in Los Angeles and California. I’ve sat on the boards of numerous cat/dog rescues and violence prevention organizations and am currently the vice president of a well known animal welfare foundation. I’ve been rescuing dogs, cats and other small animals since I was a child and now use these “unwanted” animals to teach violence prevention to children and young adults.
I’ve realized that as a prosecutor of animal abuse, I have a unique opportunity to inspire the next generation of lawyers to be the “movers and shakers” in animal welfare. I mentor law students with a special interest in aniamal welfare, many of whom are heads of law school organizations already influencing the future mindset of animal welfare lawyers and advocates. And it’s worth noting that I’ve observed a distinct shift in attitudes among these future “movers and shakers.” They’re no longer interested in conventional, “band-aid” rescuing; they demand “solution-based’ programs that brings about meaningful and longt erm solutions which actually prevent “unwanted animals”
Since I’ve always been committed to changing the “system” from within, believing this is the only way to make long lasting changes in our society, I feel we have a real opportunity to achieve changes by educating the general public and welfare advocates about the need to eliminate the “disposable animal culture” through “solution-based” approaches
